With the prospect of baseball on the horizon, I am cautiously optimistic. The Arizona idea is being batted around and it seems it is pretty legit. It could work. As I have been reading all of the pros and cons, there is one thing that I keep coming back to. It’s the players that won’t consider the option because of family. Now before you write me an angry letter, I love my family. I love being with my family. I grew up in a military family. I married a career military man. The military is near and dear to me and this is probably why this just sticks in my craw. Baseball is talking about 4 months away. 4 months! Those that deploy to countries thousands of miles away are gone a lot longer than 4 months. They miss birthdays, anniversaries, graduations and yes, sometimes births. I know many will say this is comparing apples to oranges, but I don’t think so. I would love to see if the players that say I can’t be away from my kids and only see them through a screen actually hear themselves. They sound so selfish. These are guys making a lot of money and for some of them more money than most people ever see in their lifetime. They are lucky. They are in the 17.6 % of players who were drafted and made it to the show. It’s a privilege to play a professional sport. If you don’t want to play, then don’t play. Forfeit your salary for the year and someone else will take the spot. It’s that simple. Most people don’t get that chance to say I don’t want to play and still keep their job. Players need to look beyond themselves. This country needs something to lift it up. We need baseball. We need some sense of normalcy. MLB could be that bright spot.
