Who was Herman Long?

On Episode 9, we talked about milestones. In my research, I found that Herman Long is the leader on the most errors in MLB. He tops the list at 1,096. This made me want to know more about Herman Long. Herman Long was born in April 13, 1866 in Chicago, Illinois. He spoke fluent German which probably led to his nickname Germany. He was also called the “Flying Dutchman”. He played 15 seasons as a short stop. He played for the Kansas City Cowboys, Boston Beaneaters, New York Highlanders, Detroit Tigers and the Philadelphia Phillies. Despite topping the all time errors list Herman’s fellow players had a different view of him.

In 1903, (future Hall of Fame) pitcher Kid Nichols said of Long, “Herman Long is the greatest shortstop of them all. You can speak of your [Hughie] Jennings, and write of your [Jack] Glasscocks all you want, but this man Long at his best had them beat by a city block. Jennings was a brilliant ball player, and without doubt one of the leading players of the age, but this talk of his being better than Herman Long is all rot.” (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herman_Long_(baseball))

Long died on September 16, 1909 in Denver, Colorado. He had tuberculosis and had moved to Denver for the fresh air. Friends paid for his body to be taken back to Chicago. He is buried in Concordia Cemetery in Forest Park, Illinois.

Jana’s Soapbox Rant #1

With the prospect of baseball on the horizon, I am cautiously optimistic. The Arizona idea is being batted around and it seems it is pretty legit. It could work. As I have been reading all of the pros and cons, there is one thing that I  keep coming back to. It’s the players that won’t consider the option because of family. Now before you write me an angry letter, I love my family. I love being with my family. I grew up in a military family. I married a career military man. The military is near and dear to me and this is probably why this just sticks in my craw. Baseball is talking about 4 months away. 4 months! Those that deploy to countries thousands of miles away are gone a lot longer than 4 months. They miss birthdays, anniversaries, graduations and yes, sometimes births. I know many will say this is comparing apples to oranges, but I don’t think so. I would love to see if the players that say I can’t be away from my kids and only see them through a screen actually hear themselves. They sound so selfish. These are guys making a lot of money and for some of them more money than most people ever see in their lifetime. They are lucky. They are in the 17.6 % of players who were drafted and made it to the show. It’s a privilege to play a professional sport.  If you don’t want to play, then don’t play. Forfeit your salary for the year and someone else will take the spot. It’s that simple. Most people don’t get that chance to say I don’t want to play and still keep their job. Players need to look beyond themselves. This country needs something to lift it up. We need baseball. We need some sense of normalcy. MLB could be that bright spot.

Our Sandlot Lineups

On Episode 3, we decided to pick a new cast for the movie, The Sandlot featuring Dodger and Angels players. This was a fun exercise because for one it gave us an excuse to watch the movie – not that you have to one. It also gave us a chance to talk more about our favorite teams while we wait for the season to start. I probably had an easier time than my big brother, Jeff. The Dodgers have a lot of depth and I guess that “Hollywood lifestyle”.

Here our lineups featuring the Dodgers & Angels

Smalls: AJ Pollack /Mike Trout

Ham: Max Muncy / Brian Goodwin

Benny: Cody Bellinger /Albert Pujols

Squints: Walker Buehler/Shohei Othani

Timmy & Tommy ‘Repeat” Timmons: Corey Seager and Gavin Lux

Tommy LaStella and Dillon Peters

Yeah Yeah: Kike Hernandez /David Fletcher

DeNunez: Chris Taylor/Andrew Heaney

Bertram: Tony Gonsolin/Andrelton Simmons

Do you agree with our choices? Who would you choose for your team?

Rookies

This is our first season in the podcast world! We started our podcast as another way to talk about baseball. We are siblings, a little sister and a big brother, that love baseball! Baseball has always been part of our lives. We can’t remember when it wasn’t. The love of the game was fostered by our grandpa. We were always watching games with him or listening on the radio. It’s a bond we cherish.

We are all in a long rain delay waiting for baseball to start. Listening to our podcast is a good cure to our baseball blues. We have talked about the season delay, what players are doing to stay in shape, our Sandlot line up featuring Dodgers and Angels players and taking a virtual visit to the Negro League Baseball Museum as well as the Baseball Hall of Fame. Catch up on all of our episodes at anchor.fm, spotify, google podcasts, breaker and radiopublic. New episodes drop on Thursdays at 4:10 ET/1:10 PT.
